Every November, social media feeds fill up with daily posts of gratitude. I’ve always watched from the sidelines, telling myself I was simply “too busy” to join in. Between managing household chores, daily routines, and the endless mental load, finding the time to pause and reflect often felt like just another item on an already overwhelming checklist.
But this year, I’m deciding to change that narrative.
Starting the Month Right: The Joy of a Fixed Appliance
My shift in perspective came right on November 1st, courtesy of a surprisingly relatable household crisis. For nearly a month, our washing machine had been completely out of commission. If you’ve ever had to manage a household with a broken washer for four weeks, you know the quiet desperation it brings—the mounting piles of clothes, the logistics, and the dreaded trips to the local laundromat.
Enter my wonderful husband, who rolled up his sleeves, put his DIY skills to the test, and managed to fix it.
Today, as I loaded the very first batch of laundry into a machine that actually works, I felt a profound wave of relief. No spending my afternoon hauling baskets to a laundromat, no waiting around for cycles to finish in a public space. Just the quiet hum of a functioning appliance in my own home.
It’s so easy to overlook these ordinary conveniences until they are gone. We live our lives expecting appliances to run, water to flow, and modern systems to support us seamlessly.
Standing there folding fresh laundry, it hit me: having a washing machine—let alone having a partner capable of repairing it—is an immense privilege. Millions of people around the world do not have access to these kinds of baseline comforts, yet they still manage to find joy and resilience every single day.
What’s Next
This month, I want to lean into those “small things” we so often take for granted. Gratitude doesn’t always have to be about grand, life-changing milestones; sometimes, it’s as simple as clean clothes, a supportive partner, and a fresh start on the first day of the month.
Here’s to a November filled with mindfulness, appreciation, and noticing the little details that truly make a house a home.
What are you taking for granted today that you might want to pause and appreciate?
May your day be: good, great and wonderful!
